Sub-team Overview

UBC TBog is organized into nine different subteams, including a variety of Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Design and Operations teams. Technical teams design key components of the toboggan, while the rest play an important part in competition or team management. Each team offers a different experience, potentially including CAD, machining, project management, technical writing, and artistic design. No matter your background, engineering, science, arts or business, we have a role for you on TBOG. Check out the sub-teams below to see where you fit!

Engineering Sub-Teams

  • Concrete Mix

Concrete Mix experiments with different aggregates and composition to create a lightweight, sustainable, high-strength concrete for the toboggan’s skis.

  • Ski Design

Ski designs the geometry of our skis, the only surface able to touch the ground. The must carry and distribute the weight weight of the toboggan (which can be up to 1500lbs) and heavily coordinate with Mix and Steering.

  • Braking

The toboggan must be stopped! Braking designs a mechanical braking system to be triggered by the toboggan rider and stop the toboggan in the shortest distance possible.

  • Superstructure

Superstructure designs and builds a metal (usually steel) rollcage that protects the riders in case of a crash. Safety analysis and structural design are integral to this sub-team.

  • Steering

Steering engineers the mechanical control system of the Toboggan. Their design must ensure responsive handling and is showcase by the slalom race at competition.

  • Electrical

Elec takes on different projects each year. This varies from a braking assistance system using electric actuators to themed videos games to showcase at our technical exhibition.

Design and Operations Sub-Teams

  • Technical Exhibition

Tech-Ex actualizes our chosen theme at competition by designing a creative booth to display our toboggan. Artistic design + wooden toboggan shipping container = an amazing tech-ex display.

  • Spirit

Spirit is one of the most important elements of competition. Spirit designs costumes, patches and dances. They compete in mini spirit challenges throughout the year, and bring the energy and fun to comp!

  • External

External manages any sponsorship outreach and team marketing. They run the TBOG social media and website, photography at competition, sponsorship appreciation events and much more.

  • Finance

Finance tracks budgets, manages spending, and allocates resources effectively. The subteam handles reimbursements, plans competition costs, and keeps the project financially sustainable.

  • Administration

Admin keeps the team organized and running smoothly. The subteam manages communications, documents, and logistics using organizational tools.
