Steering
Steering is a uniquely challenging subteam that requires a strong understanding of mechanical systems and precise integration to ensure performance and reliability at competition. For those interested in vehicles, mechanical design, or hands-on work, the steering subteam is a great place to learn new things, develop your skills, and have fun!

What does Steering do?
Steering is one of the key mechanical systems on the toboggan. Our subteam is responsible for creating a mechanism that can reliably maneuver the toboggan through the gates of a slalom course at competition. In many cases, the steering subteam has also created a front suspension system for the toboggan.
We frequently use SolidWorks for 3-D modelling and Finite Element Analysis (FEA). To back up our designs, we conduct calculations both by hand and in Matlab. We build our design using a combination of off-the-shelf parts and custom parts we design and fabricate ourselves. During manufacturing, we use a variety of techniques including waterjet cutting, machining, and hand tools.
