MIX!

MIX!

The Concrete Mix Design subteam offers a unique hands-on learning experience, where members collaborate on the development of innovative mix designs and lab experimentation.

What does Concrete Mix do?

Mix design plays a vital role in mitigating the carbon footprint of the toboggan design while ensuring the concrete meets the strength, workability and durability required to fill the toboggan ski moulds. Through locally sourced, novel aggregate procurement, such as crushed oyster shells and recycled garnet sand, Mix Design prioritizes sustainable innovation and low lifetime carbon emissions to offset the use of Portland Cement.

As part of the Mix Design subteam, members will be introduced to essential concrete properties, composition and industry terminology while gaining experiential learning in weekly concrete batch creation in the lab. Members will learn to perform air content, slump cone and compression strength lab testing, as well as become familiar with industrial laboratory equipment, aggregate preparation and life cycle analysis (LCA) tracking. Students in civil, chemical, materials, environmental and geo will find Mix complementary to in-class learning, but anyone and everyone is welcome to join!
